8:30 am I am packing up my office. In the next couple of weeks I will be moving out of the office I have occupied for almost 10 years. We are turning this space back into group study rooms. I will miss my view up on the second floor.

10 am Reading RSS feeds and notice Library Day in the Life project and decide to get involved.

10:15 Phone call from vendor interrupts scanning my RSS feeds. Take care of that.

10:22 Colleague calls. Nedds to reserev LI room for Finals tests. Person who usually does it is on vacation. Backup isn’t aswering phone. I go down to investigate. Just had headphones on and didn’t hear phone. I’ll be glad when I move to floor where almost everyone else is.

10:30 back to RSS and on to emails.

10:45 Finished emails./ Love the summer. So few emails.

11 am Create new Group for Biol and Physical Sci. Faculty–I volunteered to be their liaison until a new librarian is on board. Sent email introducing myself and asking if they need anything for fall classes to get their orders in.

11:15 call from friend about dinner tonight.

11:30 Working on Biology Blog

12:15 Answered some questions about LibGuides. We are converting our Guides and Tips. I did all mine first so am now kind of the in-House expert on LibGuides.

12:45 Consult with group moving videos to Ref area. They decided to move VHS’s first. Still looking for perfect security for DVD’s. Ref Collection was weeded earlier in the summer and is currently being shifted to make space for videos.

1:00 Answered faculty email about calendar software packages that also handle links to maps, info etc. They want to create a calendar for students with campus and DC area events integrated.

1:15-1:45 lunch at my desk

1:45. Meet with ref associate about cleaning up our publications folders and some moving of furniture in ref area.

2 pm Start working on LibGuide for Biology. Do some cruising on web at other Guides. I know little to nothing about Biology, but have confidence I can create aGuide that will help newbies learn about our resources

3:45 Meet with colleague about more moves in the Ref area

4-6 My Desk hours. Library is surprisingly busy for summer. Have two real ref qustions–helping people track down some difficult to find articles; a couple do you own this book; 4 or so I need help with Word. Busier than most summer shifts. In between questions, I edit my annual report and submit it; respond to a couple of other emails from colleagues; continue working on Biology Guide and select books from Choice reviews

9-10 pm. At home. Cleaning out mywork email. I go on vacation on Thursday and it will blow up unless I weed out a bunch of emails with large attachments.

Day 2

Noon–I work until 8 pm tonight so came in at noon

noon-1 pm Reviewed Library related news on RSS feed and answered email.

1-2 Finished up biology LibGuide.

2-3 Filled up more boxes and shuttled them to new office. Furniture has not been moved so can’t unpack.

3-4 Extra hour on Desk because of vacations. not busy. Reviewed list database order of science DB. Made some changes.l Faxed all the list of changes to our metalib subject list order to our Consortium Office.

4-4:15 Discussed PubMed linking problem with electronic resources librarian. I set it up when I did that job, but link disappeared last week. Need to get it fixed before school starts. We are both going on vacation.

4:15-5 Began weeding Q Ref books

5:15-6 Dinner

6-8 Desk. Answered just acouple of computer and directional qustions. Its very quiet. Reviewed books I pulled. Discarded 60 titles and transferring 30 or so. Need to have a sit down with Science faculty. We have been buying too much natural history.

Day 3

8-8:45. Move new Ready ref Book shelf into place. Put books we are keeping in ready on Shelf. Move discards and transfers into proper places.

8:45-9 Review approval plan books in Acq. Take “free” books back to Acq. Need a new shelf for them

9-9:15 Begin pack what will be the last box.

9:15-9:35. Review RSS feeds and answer email.

9:35 go to LRC to discuss newsletter articles with editor

10-11:45 Desk. Two phone calls, bothe good qustions. Nothing else. Weeded e-maisl so won’t blow up. Reviewed transfers and discards fromRef Coll in Religion

12-1 Awrd lunch for good ideas for last year.

1:30-2:00 Digging ouround in files and on web on how to get link icon displaying again in PubMed.

2-2:215. Email from faculty member on books needed for project. Followup.

2:15- Start Biology Beyond Basics Lib Guide.

I am posting this on my “play” blog”. Its one I created last year to learn blogging. I actually maintain a couple of others for the faculty and students in my departments here on campus.

I have the 10-6 shift today, but got in more than an hour early, like most days. Too much to do, so little time.

I can see using a podcast for our Tour/Orientation to the library.
